Pulsar Kicks: Spin and Kinematic Constraints
نویسنده
چکیده
It has been noted that the Crab and Vela pulsar proper motions lie along the symmetry axes of their wind nebulae. In an effort to promote this observation to a serious test of kick physics, we are using CXO images and other data to estimate the angle between the proper motion and PWN (i.e., spin) axis for a number of pulsars. Here we give a progress report on this work and the constraints that these data provide on kick models. Present data suggest that a kick duration of τK ∼ 3 s is sufficient to explain the alignment of most pulsars. This rules out electromagnetic and hydrodynamic kick models, but is fairly consistent with proposed anisotropic neutrino emission. However, some objects, especially PSR J0538+2817 show such good alignment that even neutrino models are challenged.

Pulsar Kicks and Spin Tilts in the Close Double Neutron Stars Psrj0737-3039, Psrb1534+12 and Psrb1913+16
In view of the recent measurement of the scintillation velocity for PSRJ0737-3039, we examine the complete set of constraints imposed on the pulsar B natal kicks (magnitude and orientation) and predict the most favorable pulsar kick velocity and spin tilt for both isotropic and polar kicks. Our analysis takes into account both currently unknown parameters: the orientation of the orbital plane o...

We use recent information on geodetic precession of the binary pulsar B1913+16 along with measurements of its orbital parameters and proper motion to derive new constraints on the immediate progenitor of this double neutron star system. As part of our analysis we model the motion of the binary in the Galaxy after the second supernova explosion, and we derive constraints on the unknown radial ve...

We present an updated set of constraints for the progenitor of PSR J0737−3039 and for the natal kicks imparted to pulsar B taking into account both the evolutionary and kinematic history of the double neutron star. For this purpose, we use recently reported scintillation velocity measurements to trace the motion of the system in the Galaxy backwards in time as a function of the unknown orientat...
متن کاملSpin Flavor Oscillation of Neutrinos in Rotating Gravitational Fields and Their Effects on Pulsar Kicks
The origin of high velocities of pulsars is studied by considering the spin-flip conversion of neutrinos propagating in a gravitational field of a protoneutron star. For a rotating gravitational source (such as pulsars) with angular velocity , one finds that the spin connections (entering in the Dirac equation written in curved space time) induce an additional contribution to neutrino energy wh...
متن کاملCore-Collapse Supernovae and Neutron Star Kicks
Recent observations have revealed many new puzzles related to core-collapse supernovae, including the formation of magnetars and black holes and their possible GRB connections. We review our current understanding of the origin of pulsar kicks and supernova asymmetry. It is argued that neutron star kicks are intimately connected to the other fundamental parameters of young neutron stars, such as...
